Charles James Fraser

  • Charles James Fraser was born on 29 August 1913 at 166b High St, Elgin, Scotland.
  • He began military service on 2 March 1935 Royal Army Service Corps, Supplementary Reservist, (Militiamen), and posted to Royal Army Service Corps Pool.
  • Charles was an active member of the Territorials, like his Father before, and a serving soldier from 9/10/1939 until 25/1/1946, and shown called up 01/09/1939 for war service. At enlistment his address was shown as, 12 Bruceland Road, Elgin, Scotland. This would be where his Mother and Step Father lived. He was shown as a Driver, Mechanical, later taking trade tests in, Waterman D2, and Fitter C1. His service trade is shown as, Coxswain.

    Charles James served with the Royal Army Service Corps until his demob on the 25 Jan 1946. He was reputed to have served on a P.T.B. boat that took part in the evacuation of Dunkirk.
    It is interesting to note in Charles Service Record, he is recorded as being overseas with the British Expeditionary Force, 12-03-1939 until 29-05-1940. At this time, his movements show he was not mobilized until 02-03-1939, and he was posted to 38th Company. So where was he, and where was the 38th leading up to Dunkirk?

    Charles attained the rank of Sergeant twice in his career, Army No, T/60990. He was known to have been in the 122 Fire boat coy, Army fire service R.A.S.C. at the time he was discharged, as shown by his Army papers.

    Background info;
    In 1942 the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) was formed by personnel drawn chiefly from Royal Army Ordnance Corps, and also Royal Army Service Corps, Royal Engineers, and Royal Signals.

    Following his discharge, Charles returned home to Elgin, Scotland. And was shown to have drawn his first two War gratuities on the 03/12/1945, from the local post office in Elgin.
    He drew his second gratuity in Eltham, London, 15/12/1945, at Newmarket Green, S.E.9. Post Office.
    He then drew his last gratuity in East Ham, London, 11/1/1946, post office unknown.

    Following his De mob from the Army, Charles James made a claim to Entitlement, for the Award of Campaign Star, 1939-45.
    This was awarded on the 30 July 1946 and sent to his Address at Enlistment, 12 Bruceland Road, Elgin, Scotland. But Charles, Doris and Jean were all now living with Doris's Mother, Rachel, at 27 Bishop Road, Chelmsford, Essex.


    Charles was cremated at Garston Crematorium, Watford, Hertfordshire. This being his preference against Burial. His Ashes were later scattered on the shores of one of his Favourite Fishing places, Loch Ness in Scotland.
  • He married Doris Amy Courtman, daughter of Chrisopher Courtman and Rachel Eve Chalk, on 25 March 1948 at Register office, Stoke Newington, London, England.
  • He was Foreman Anodiser of Alluminium, between 1953 and 1971 (dates approx) circa 1953.
  • He was Process worker for Elliott/GEC Automation, between 1971 and 1978 (dates approx) circa 1971.
  • He was retired; Charles Died just six Months short of Retirement.
  • He died on 10 March 1978 at Barnet General Hospital, London Borough of Barnet, Hertfordshire, England, at age 64 of Carcinoma of the Lung. Certified by D.G.Sumners M.B.
  • His body was cremated on 17 March 1978 at West Herts Crematorium, Gaston, Watford, Hertfordshire, England, Charles Ashes were scatered on the shore of Loc Ness, Inverness, Scotland.
